AQA Specification

Politics influences every aspect of your life. You will look at how the country is governed and how power is used within political institutions to make decisions that impact how people live.

You will study:

  • Paper 1: Government and politics of the UK
  • Paper 2: Government and politics of the USA and comparative politics
  • Paper 3: Political ideas

Assessment

The three papers are 2 hours each and contain a mixture of medium length ‘explain’ and essay questions.

Example of topics studied:

  • Historical documents relevant to the development of UK politics such as Magna Carta (1215) and Act of Settlement (1701)
  • The nature of the British constitution
  • Structure and role of Parliament
  • The Prime Minister and cabinet
  • The Judiciary
  • Elections and referendums
  • Government and politics of the USA – US Constitution and Bill of Rights
  • Concepts such as ideology, factionalism, party decline and renewal
  • The role of pressure groups in promoting and supporting rights. E.g. abortion, race, freedom of speech, religion, sexual orientation and the right to bear arms.

Politics complements A Levels such as Geography, History, Sociology

Our Schools
