History

A knowledge of the past builds the future

Edexcel Specification

The high-achieving History Department at Sheringham takes an ambitious and rigorous approach to your learning at A Level. We provide seminar sessions, mini-lectures and individual tutoring, led by History specialists, to help you achieve your full potential.

You will be supplied with a variety of resources to assist your learning and we expect you to make use of the library which is stocked with an excellent range of History books. It is vital that you read widely on the subject to achieve a high examination grade.

Studying History equips you with important skills: to argue a case, weigh up evidence and reach a judgement. Analysis and evaluation are built into every History lesson, and we develop your essay-writing skills through our focus on forming arguments, structuring balanced paragraphs and writing clear conclusions. Coursework is also an excellent opportunity for further developing your independent research skills.

You will study:

Paper 1 and 2: Communist States in the 20th century: Russia (30% of the final mark) and China (20% of the final mark)

Paper 3: Rebellion and Disorder under the Tudors (30% of the final mark)

Coursework: Civil rights in the USA (20% of the final mark)

Careers/Further Education

The skills gained through studying A-level History provide a good foundation for many Higher Education courses and careers such as Law, Politics and Journalism. At degree level you can combine History with many other subjects including English, Economics or Sociology.
